The “Pinterest Perfect” Laundry Room Dilemma

Low Waste Laundry Swaps

We’ve all seen those pictures on Pinterest. You know, the ones where someone has these giant clear containers of their liquid detergents, bleach, stain removers, scent boosting beads, and dryer sheets. You even say how gorgeous it is and it’s just picture perfect, but how much waste really goes into maintaining it and is it even good your body to have all those products?

To really answer this we need to look into how much waste goes into just doing laundry in year on average. According to Asheville Greenworks, Americans throw away on average 900 million laundry jugs a year. Factor in that dryer sheets aren’t biodegradable or recyclable that’s a lot of waste! Just to add little spice to it most of these detergents and other laundry items aren’t even good for your body. Columbia University did a study where they found companies have been adding micro plastics to your detergents. (Why we need micro plastics to clean our clothes is a mystery to us.) Most of the time there are chemicals like formaldehyde, 1,4-Dioxane, phosphates, and more added into these products that are harmful to people with sensitive skin and our health! The good news is that we don’t have to support these companies that create these products, because there are plenty of alternatives!

If you still want to have that picture perfect laundry room use containers you already have but use natural laundry soaps. There are online stores that will mail you refills of your favorite products or come in biodegradable/reusable containers to create less waste. If you’re someone who likes their laundry to smell amazing don’t worry! Instead of using fragrances to create scents they use essential oils.

Now you might be thinking, “Okay, sounds great for washing but what do I do about drying? I can’t have static in my clothes.”

Well, you’re right and we have a solution for that too! Wool dryer balls are going to be your new best friend! They reduce the amount of static in your clothes just like dryer sheets, but aren’t single use. Typically one dryer balls has a lifetime of 100 cycles! You can even dab your fav essential oil scent onto them to scent boost your laundry. As an added bonus they fluff your clothes or whatever you’re drying AND helps reduce the dry time!

If you’re ready to make the switch we have our fav websites that we buy our soaps and dryer balls from along with our sources we used for this post!

Just think in no time you’ll have your “Pinterest Perfect” laundry room, but without the guilt of high waste and chemically harmful products!
